Innovation from Serendipity, Error, and Exaptation


Introduction:

Innovation rarely follows a straightforward trajectory. Some of the most transformative breakthroughs in science, technology, and everyday life have emerged from unexpected moments, mistakes, or imaginative repurposing. Serendipity, error, and exaptation underscore how unplanned occurrences, failed attempts, or reinterpreted tools can lead to groundbreaking innovations. These pathways illustrate that innovation often arises not solely from intentional design but from a mindset that values curiosity, adaptability, and the unforeseen.

Innovation from Serendipity:

Serendipity is the unplanned finding of something valuable while searching for something entirely unrelated. A prevalent example is Alexander Fleming's discovery of penicillin in 1928. He was not actively seeking antibiotics but noticed that mold on a petri dish had destroyed bacteria, a serendipitous find that would later change modern medicine (Berkun 2010).

Serendipity refers to the unexpected findings of something valuable or exciting you were not actively seeking. It is akin to finding a delightful bonus while engaged in another task. In my own experience, I once created a simple tool for personal use to organize my notes, tracking the hours allocated to a project versus the actual time spent. A colleague suggested that this tool could be adapted into a team productivity tracker, which, after some enhancements, the team also began using as an estimation tool. This was an idea I had never considered, yet it proved to be quite effective.

Innovation from Error:

I discovered that errors could lead to valuable insights and breakthroughs. A good case in point is the microwave oven. Engineer Percy Spencer, conducting experiments with radar technology, could see that a chocolate bar in his pocket had melted. Rather than dismissing the unexpected event, he investigated further, which later resulted in a revolutionary invention of kitchen technology (Hossbach 2014). 

A mistake unexpectedly helps or forms new knowledge. If you trip up but learn well, eventually, it will result in a positive output. I experienced this when programming, when a buggy script accidentally revealed a better method of filtering cybersecurity alerts.

Innovation from Exaptation:

Exaptation refers to taking an object or idea originally designed for one purpose and successfully repurposing it for another. A well-known example is bubble wrap, which was initially intended as a type of 3D wallpaper but failed in that market. It later found widespread commercial success when reimagined as a packing material (Fagerberg, Mowery, & Nelson, 2005). In the technology sector, I have observed facial recognition technology, initially developed for security purposes, being adapted for monitoring user experience in educational platforms, specifically, to gauge student engagement in virtual classrooms (Fagerberg, Mowery et al. 2005).

Conclusion:

These three paths—serendipity, error, and exaptation—highlight that innovation is not linear. Surprise, unexpected consequences, or even abuse propel us ahead. Staying open to surprises, learning from mistakes, and finding innovative ways to utilize concepts are critical to discovering new potentialities.
